After being founded in 2021, the Swiss company Sirius Aviation developed the H2 aircraft ‘Sirius Jet’ together with BMW Designworks and the Sauber Group. The 600 kph (323 mph) Sirius Jet will offer space for up to five people and, according to Sirius, can combine the aerodynamics of a jet with the ability to take off and land vertically. Sirius Aviation plans to present the propulsion system in January 2024.
The flight range for the hydrogen VTOL is stated to be 1,850 km (approximately 1150 miles), far above the “150-mile range typical of purely electric aircraft”. In early 2024, Sirius i planning to host a groundbreaking event in Switzerland for the “unveiling and inaugural ignition of Sirius Jet’s Hydrogen-Electric Ducted Fan Propulsion System.”
VTOL have been garnering more interest of late in the aviation industry, as even giants such as Lufthansa have been reported to be investing in the technology, however, other big names, such as Rolls-Royce have attempted to commercialize the technology and failed, announcing plans to sell of their business just recently. The US American FAA is working together with the Air Force to license the technology for flight in the USA, while the startup Lilium has been making steady progress towards flight in Europe.
